Muse, SouKeyna Shares her Hustle, Inspirations & Aspirations!
Who is SouKeyna? What do you want to be known for in this lifetime?
It’s hard to say who I am. I think you’d have to ask the people who know me. I’d hope they say I’m a really loving person who genuinely cares about other people. I want to be known for making people feel seen. I think life can get really fast and so busy that we stop appreciating people and their stories. So anytime I meet someone I want them to feel acknowledged and [know] that their story is being celebrated.
What inspired you to pursue modeling?
My mom and grandmother were models actually! I grew up around it, but my mom did it for a while and then started her own hair salon. I was the only person in my family who really wanted to pursue it as a full time career. Ever since I was little I always told my parents I wanted to be a model and a scientist, so I’m doing both!
Who are some of your favorite models/designers? (Dead or Alive)
Definitely Iman Hammam, Maria Borgesand and Halima Aden. I love their authenticity and style. They are all so striking and confident in themselves.
Describe your style in three words!
Oh man this is hard! Um…. flirty, confident, and bold
What was your 1.11ven moment/breakthrough – a time you realized you could do anything you set out to do?
I realized early on in modeling that I wasn’t considered to have the ‘mainstream’ look. I am 5’5, with very dark skin and not everyone was about it. But I’ve known who I am and who I wanted to be since I was in elementary school and my dream wasn’t going to change because a few people said it had to. I think I had my 1.11ven moment when I stopped caring about what anyone had to say and I made my dreams a reality anyway.
Has there ever been a time where you doubted yourself and wanted to stop modeling? If so, how did you push pass that doubt?
Modeling is the one industry where you pay people to judge you on your physical appearance. I love me and I’m happy with who I am but there’s always doubt. I’ve never questioned that this is something I want to do. I feel strongly about it because it goes beyond just me. I want other girls and boys with my complexion and my height to see themselves and be able to say, I can do this too.
What advice can you give to young girls (and boys) who want to pursue a career in the modeling industry
Don’t ever let anyone tell you, you can’t. Don’t ever let anyone tell you you’re not tall enough, skinny enough, strong enough, you are!
What are you doing when you’re not modeling? What’s the tea sis?!
Ummm......studying lol. My friends might say I’m boring but I love being at home and reading, talking to my plants (yes, I really do that), and dancing in my room. I’m also in the process of creating a blog so I can engage more with my followers.
What are your self-care rituals/tips? How do you stay looking so bomb?
LOL! Thank you! Well anyone who knows me, knows I love Kombucha, so I drink that when I can. I also try not to eat a lot of processed food. Self-care is me dancing in my room and time with my plants. I’m kind of obsessed with them…don’t judge me.
What’s your favorite album out right now & why?
I love Burna Boy, Outside. The whole album is this really beautiful Afro-Soul sound. I connect to each song differently. It sounds weird, but it brings back memories I feel I haven’t even experienced yet.
Favorite women of color to follow on Instagram?
Lupita!!!! *swoon* lol
What are some upcoming projects that we can expect to see you flourish in?
Oh man I’ve been blessed with a lot of amazing opportunities lately! A lot I can’t talk about until its out though so you’ll have to keep watching on my Instagram and of course my blog once it launches!
